apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is made by combining apples with yeast. This is something I found out after, I am yet to fully confirm whether yeast agrees with me. Recently I tried sunflower seed bread, no gluten so I thought I was safe, but I actually bloated more than normal and also most straight away. The common denominator in a standard loaf and the sunflower seed bread was yeast. So, the side effects I found whilst taking apple cider vinegar may make more sense now having an inkling I may be sensitive to yeast. Anyway… back to some facts…

The yeast converts the sugar in the apples into alcohol. Bacteria are then added to the mixture, which ferment the alcohol into acetic acid.

Acetic acid is classified as a “weak acid,” but still has fairly strong acidic properties when concentrated.

The Apple cider vinegar also contains water and small amounts of other acids, vitamins and minerals.

Mentioned in my Instagram post, prior to trying Apple cider vinegar, several studies have found that acetic acid and apple cider vinegar may promote fat burning and weight loss, decrease blood sugar levels, increase insulin sensitivity and improve cholesterol levels.

However, there is some side effects, less commonly written about, some of which I encountered.

Constipation; because the Apple cider vinegar helps to prevent blood sugar from spiking, slowing down the absorption into the blood stream, reducing the rate at which the food leaves the stomach.

Nausea; some people found it to decrease appetite, sometimes this was because it made them feel sick.

Tooth Decay; the acidity may cause some enamel erosion or weakness if used over long periods of time.

Throat or Skin Burns; this side effect is mainly found in children but for those of us who are sensitive to other foods it may be something to consider.

How to take Apple cider vinegar safely;

Correct dosage, build up your intake.

Dilute with water.

Rinse your mouth.

Hope this helps anyone interested in giving it a go. I know plenty of people who swear by it, but for me, it wasn’t a ritual I wanted to continue after having more side effects than benefits.
